Spring Mason Bee Mud Box

Mason Bee Mud Box: The Original Mud Architects!

Female mason bees are nature's architects, building nest chambers with clay-rich mud to create individual spaces for each developing baby bee. Each chamber is sealed with a thick mud cap to protect their offspring from predators, ensuring they emerge healthy and ready to pollinate in the spring.

Did you know? Mason bees won't nest unless a reliable source of clay mud is available within 25 sq. ft.!

Why Clay-Mud is Essential:

  • Mason bees prefer mud with a high clay content, similar to modeling clay.
  • Arid locations, sandy soil, and rooftop gardens often lack the proper moisture levels to keep mud usable for mason bees.

The Mud Box: A Smart Solution with Capillary Action

The Mason Bee Mud Box uses capillary action to ensure that mason bees always have access to perfectly moist mud. Here's how it works:

  • Water stored in the Mud Box is wicked up through the black capillary cloth and under the Mason Bee Mud Mix.
  • This keeps the clay mud at the ideal moisture level for nesting.
  • Depending on weather conditions, the water in the storage bin may last 1–2 weeks before needing a refill.

Includes:

  • 1 cup of dried clay (Mason Bee Mud Mix)
  • 1 capillary cloth
  • 1 Mud Box
  • Easy-to-follow instructions for setup

Ensure your mason bees have the perfect nesting environment with our Mason Bee Mud Box—keeping them happy, healthy, and ready to pollinate your garden next spring!

Product Instructions

The Mason Bee Mud Box keeps clay like mud moist in yards with very sandy soil and in arid locations like deserts and rooftop or balcony gardens. If your mud is too dry for even one day, mason bees will leave your yard and nest elsewhere. The mud box uses capillary action to keep your clay like mud moist.

Instructions

  • Combine the mud mix powder with 1/4 cup of water in a bowl. Mix thoroughly. It will be dry and crumbly. Add water 1 Tbsp. at a time, mixing well after each addition, until you have a mixture that is thick and pliable enough that you can knead it like modeling clay. If you made a ball if it in your hand it should maintain its shape.
  • Fill the bottom of the mud box container with water.
  • Starting at the hinged edge of the tray, place the short edge of the black capillary cloth into the water, just until the edge rests on the bottom. There will be enough cloth left to fold over and rest on the laminated instruction sheet, which acts as a bridge over the water in the tray.
  • Lay the laminated instruction sheet on top of the water and fold the black cloth over the top of it.
  • Squeeze the mason bee mud mix onto the black cloth. No need to spread it out. A nice lump of clay will be perfect.
  • Check the water level periodically and add more as necessary.

Leave the container lid open and place the Mason Bee Mud Box within 10-20 ft of the mason bee house. Close the lid during rain or if debris covers the mud mix. Mason bees will crawl through the openings in the lid of the mud box to access the mud.
