Product Instructions
- Our 8 mm BeeTubes and Inserts are perfect for raising mason bees.
- The paper material allows moisture to be released through the walls—reducing the incidences of moldy cocoons and allowing for healthy bees.
- Our BeeTubes and Inserts are six inches in length.
- Economical Option! BeeTubes are reusable, so you only have to replace the Inserts each season.
Instructions
- Place BeeTubes and Inserts in your bee house with open ends facing out.
- Bees relocate their nesting tubes by sight, using visual cues to help them know which nesting tube is theirs. Since BeeTubes + Inserts are uniform in shape and size, we suggest you create variation by placing the BeeTubes at different depths inside the house. Alternatively, you could add some sticks or Bee Wayfinders between nesting tubes to act as signposts.
- At the end of the nesting season, remove the BeeTubes and store them in a BeeGuard Bag until it’s time to harvest cocoons.
Pro Tip: Pests and parasitic wasps can break through thin-walled Inserts. Do not use Inserts without the protective casing of the BeeTubes.
How to Open BeeTube Inserts
Inserts Method—Remove the Inserts from the Cardboard BeeTubes. Snip the end of the Inserts and begin peeling them apart on a diagonal—similar to a tube of ready-to-bake biscuits or cinnamon rolls. Throw used paper inserts away and save the Cardboard BeeTubes for next season.
Soak Method—Remove the Inserts from the Cardboard BeeTubes, and place them (INSERTS ONLY) in a tub of lukewarm water. The glue will dissolve in about 15 minutes, and you'll be able to separate the mason bee cocoons from the paper easily. Save Cardboard BeeTubes for next season.
Spring mason bee cocoons can stay immersed in water for up to an hour without damage to the bees. However, don't wash your cocoons after January, as this can cause the cocoons to become leathery and make it difficult for young bees to emerge in the spring.
